Excursions (cont...)

XOCHICALCO RUINS (36 km
from Cuernavaca) are topped by a pyramid on the peak of a rocky hill,
dedicated to the Plugged Serpent whose coils surround the whole building
and enclose fine carvings representing priests.Xochicalco was at its
height between 650 and 900 AD. Itis one of the oldest known fortresses in
Middle America and a religious center as well as an important trading
point. The name means "House of flowers". It was the meeting
place of northern and southern cultures and both calendar systems were
correlated here. There are interesting underground tunnels; one has a
shaft to the sky located at the center of the cave. There are also ball
courts. Xochicalco is well worth seeing.
TEOTIHUACAN is located 45
km from Mexico City and has some of the most remarkable relics of an
ancient civilization in the world. From around 300 BC until today, the
builders of the site remain a mystery. Why they came and why the
civilization disappeared is pure conjecture. The city housed 250,000
inhabitants and whose influence spread as far as Honduras. There are three
areas: the Ciudadela, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the
Moon. The ciudadela (citadel) is capable of holding 60,000 people and its
main feature is the temple of Quetzalcoatl (the Plugged Serpent, Lord of
Air and Wind). The Plaza of the Sun contains many buildings, but it is
dominated by the massive Pyramid of the Sun and covers almost the same
space as the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. he Pyramid of the Moon is
only half the size of that of the Pyramid of the Sun.
TEPOZTLAN is an indigenous
town surrounded by mountains... you can feel the magic in the air. This
mystic town renders cult to Tepuztécatl, an agricultural deity, to whom
the pyramid on the mountaintop is dedicated. You can climb the mountain or
visit the arts and crafts market where the greatest varieties of arts and
crafts are sold. You can also visit the fresh fruit and vegetable market
or buy herbs to cure you from whatever ailment you may have (even if it is
from a broken heart!).
If you want to have a gastronomical experience, we recommend "Los
Colorines" for its Mexican food and atmosphere. It is not expensive
and you will get a taste of real Mexican food. It is located on the main
street that takes you up the pyramid. It will be easy to detect, as the
exterior is decorated with bright colors. If you wish to go on your own,
we will gladly give you all the information you need.
GRUTAS DE CACAHUAMILPA
These caves were discovered in 1929 and opened to the public in 1940. They
are one of the largest caves in North America. The guide takes you for a
two-kilometer walk in the cave, where you can enjoy a great variety of
figures (over 1000). The stalagmite and stalactite formations resemble
Dante's Divine Comedy, the Virgin of Guadalupe, jungle animals,
politicians, etc. Some excursions have gone 6 km inside. The estimated
maximum depth is 16 km. The cave's formations are completely natural. A
pathway has been built in order to walk through them. They have also been
artificially illuminated.
